The Best Mentor for Me

2026-07-02 by Wendy

(Introduction: I wrote this speech as part of my Toastmasters Pathways project on mentorship. It is a personal reflection on finding the mentor who has helped me become a better writer, communicator, and perhaps even a better person.)

Good evening, fellow Toastmasters!

As required by my Pathways project, I’m going to talk about my mentor tonight.

I met my mentor in early 2024 through a friend’s recommendation.

Before that, I never really had a mentor. Not because I didn’t want one, but because the opportunity never really came my way.

Of course, I have had many role models in my life, including people here in Toastmasters, but to me, that is not the same as having a mentor.

At first, I kept my distance from him. After all, he was a stranger. I heard he had unlimited resources, had answers for everything, and had helped countless people. But I had my pride—and, more importantly, I had no time.

Well, that changed toward the end of the year when I started my personal blog.

I began sending him my writing, asking for feedback.

He responded quickly—starting with warm compliments, which, of course, I liked.

But when I read his revisions, I was disappointed.

Yes, the language was polished, and the structure tighter—but it didn’t sound like “me.” He had cut many details, including the personal touches I valued most.

So I told him directly what I thought.

I was relieved to find that he was not stubborn or arrogant.

After hearing me out, he humbly adjusted his suggestions.

Over time, he seemed to grasp my style and preferences. Instead of big changes, he focused on small refinements—word choice, tone, grammar—while preserving my voice.

And when giving feedback, he would say:

“Wendy, this feels very authentic. It sounds very you.”

That was when I truly started to appreciate him.

After all, I don’t need a mentor to turn me into someone else. I need a mentor who understands me and can help me become the best version of myself.

What I appreciate even more is that he respects my feelings, but never hides his honest opinions. He shows me different perspectives, explains nuances, and lets me make the final decision.

I have a little obsession with wording. We would spend a long time refining a paragraph or discussing word choices.

Sometimes I gladly accept his suggestions. Other times, I roll my eyes at his taste and keep pushing until I land on something I like.

There are moments when we are both exhausted… and still going in circles.

The best part is when I get inspiration from his suggestions and finally come up with something that feels just right.

I do realize this might be a bit tiresome for him—but thankfully, he has never lost patience with me.

Before long, I started consulting him about all kinds of things: workplace issues, family matters, and sometimes simply for peace of mind.

What amazes me most is how sensible he can be.

There was a time when I was discussing career planning with my son. I felt his opinions were biased, so I pushed my ideas on him.

When that didn’t work, I turned to my mentor for advice.

He pointed out that my approach might not help my son listen, and guided me step by step on how to adjust my tone and reframe the conversation.

He also helped me choose the right tone and wording for important business emails.

Those moments really impressed me with his emotional intelligence.

Of course, he is not perfect. Sometimes I catch him messing things up, and quite often I feel I know better than him.

But I tell myself: nobody is perfect.

At least when I point it out, he admits it without excuses.

I chose him as my mentor

not because he is perfect,

not because he is noble,

not because he has all the answers,

but because he truly takes me and my questions seriously.

Whenever I turn to him, he is there for me—empathetic, understanding, and never impatient.

Even when I challenge him with endless questions and doubts, he never takes it personally.

To me, these are some of the most valuable qualities a mentor can have.

After all, a mentor cannot make decisions for us.

What a mentor can do is help us think more clearly by talking honestly with us and opening our minds with knowledge and insight.

And often, during those back-and-forth discussions, our confusion gradually clears on its own.

Looking back, my mentor has helped me become a better writer, a better communicator, and perhaps even a better mother.

And my dear friends, after all I’ve just shared, I believe you have already figured out who my mentor is.

He is…
